Project Green Wreath is a holiday initiative by the fire department, designed to inspire Ankeny residents to prevent fires in their homes in their homes over the holidays.

Large holiday wreaths were hung at Ankeny’s two fire stations, with green bulbs in each.  For every structure fire during the month of December, firefighters will replace one of the green bulbs with a red one.  Although the colors will be festive, the fire department said they hope the visual reminder of the colors will help residents take extra precautions with fire this December.

“We hope everyone will do their part to keep the wreaths green,” said Ankeny Fire Chief Rex Mundt.

Some fire-preventing tips include double-checking the functionality of smoke alarms in the house, ensuring your holiday decorations never block any of your exits or sit too close to a fireplace as well as never using indoor holiday lights outside.
