The Iowa Department of Transportation is celebrating the end of another major road project.

The additional lane on Interstate-235 between 63rd and 73rd streets opened last weekend, but officials waited until Thursday for the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

DOT officials say the added lane will make the area safer. Authorities say the growth of the western suburbs has increased congestion on parts of I-235.

“In 2012, 58,000 vehicles a day traveled westbound on the interstate 235 between Iowa 28 and the73rd/8th street exits,” says Paul Trombino, Director of the Iowa DOT. “That’s well over the 20 year projections we had when we built Interstate 235.”

The additional lane gives drivers more time to merge onto I-235.
