More than 1.1-million people have enrolled in health insurance through the federal healthcare website.

Although the website launched Oct. 1, the majority of the sign ups for the federally facilitated website happened in December, according to the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Marilyn Tavenner.

December 24 was the last day to enroll in the insurance program in order for the healthcare coverage to take effect on Jan. 1.  In the week leading up to the deadline, nearly twice as many people enrolled as in the first part of December.

The healthcare website has been plagued by long wait times and technical glitches since its launch in October.  As a result of the problems, 16,000 Iowans who enrolled on the website are now asked to sign up on the state’s website too.
