The Marshalltown Police Department says one of its K-9’s is hanging up his collar.

AWOL joined the department in 2007. He’s since worked with K-9 handler Sergeant Melinda Ruopp. Together, the two have successfully arrested 37 suspects, completed more than 300 narcotics searches — seizing more than $1 million in illegal drugs and $113,000 in cash.

In 2010, AWOL was diagnosed with a condition that causes muscle loss and weakness in his back legs.

On Monday, Sergeant Roupp and AWOL will be honored for their service at the city council meeting. It starts at 5:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.
