The former Director of the Iowa Department of Health, Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, has come under fire for her comments that low-income Iowans using the SNAP benefits, formerly food stamps, buy more Mt. Dew than anything else.  It turns out that the statement wasn't true and Miller-Meeks recently resigned her post as director.

Republican Former Chief of Staff to Gov. Branstad Jeff Boeyink of the LS2 Group said Miller-Meeks was considering a political run and her recent resignation could be due to politics and not her comments on soda.

Democrat State Senator Matt McCoy said if there was fraud and abuse within the SNAP benefit system then we should be tracking what people purchase but at the moment, it wouldn't be necessary.
