West Des Moines needed a new city manager and city leaders found him at the landfill.

Tom Hadden will continue to serve as executive director of Metro Waste Authority until June 1. It’s the day after West Des Moines’ current City Manager, Greg Sparks’ contract will expire.

Sparks decided to leave the position.

Mayor Steve Gaer says Hadden and the council have agreed on all of the employment terms including a $177,000 annual salary.

Mayor Gaer added, “Tom has an impeccable reputation and will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to West Des Moines.”

The council will formally vote on the matter in two weeks.
