After months of recovery a Des Moines police officer who was pinned between a truck and a building is being honored for his service.

Fellow officers and city leaders joined Lieutenant Joe Gonzales as he was awarded the Exemplary Service Award by the Des Moines Police Department.

The ceremony was held at the site of the accident, the World Food Prize building.

The award showcases his dedication to the department even after the accident.

Gonzales is a 42-year veteran of the department and has helped bridge the gap between police and the Spanish speaking community.

Gonzales says he feels humbled to be awarded for something he loves to do.

“I’m really appreciative of everything that`s happened but I am sincere in the fact that I think a lot of my successes have come because of the people I have surrounded myself with,” Lt. Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez says at times he is still in pain and has to undergo another surgery. He says he plans to retire in the near future.
