Iowa State University officials say a fraud investigation is now closed.

A scientist admits he tainted the research into a possible AIDS vaccine.

The Des Moines Register obtained documents in which Dr. Dong Pyou Hon admitted he was a “foolish coward” for faking test results.

Hon was accused of tainting rabbits’ blood to show that an experimental vaccine was working to protect the animals against HIV when it wasn’t.

People became suspicious when a team at another institution couldn`t replicate the results. Hon resigned and is banned from conduction federally research for five years.

No criminal charges have been filed.

The fake research was part of a $19 million project funded by federal grants.
