A former Des Moines school board member has jumped into the race for Iowa governor.

Jonathan Narcisse, a Democrat, announced his candidacy Monday morning at the African American museum in Cedar Rapids.

Narcisse says a large part of his campaign will continue the work that Lyndon Johnson began in the 1960’s.

“50 years ago this month Lyndon Johnson declared a bold and unconditional war on poverty. And he laid out a vision on how we could achieve victory in that unrelenting war,” Narcisse said.

Running as an independent in the 2010 gubernatorial race, he received just over 1-percent of the vote.

He faces Democrat Jack Hatch in the primary.
