The federal holiday honoring civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is also a day of service.

Three central Iowa colleges are using Martin Luther King Jr. Day to give back and help feed the needy. Students and staff at AIB, DMACC and Simpson are all participating in events with Meals from the Heartland.

Each college is holding its own service project, but as a total they are hoping to package more than 80,000 meals Monday.
