A Des Moines man is facing charges for allegedly throwing a harmful substance in his ex-girlfriend’s face.

Officers took 25-year-old Michael Gatewood-Brown into custody Tuesday.

Police say Gatewood-Brown and his ex-girlfriend Ruth Pierce met January 14th to exchange items they’d left at each other’s homes. During the meeting Gatewood-Brown allegedly grabbed a jug from his car and threw it at the victim.

The liquid from the jug got into Pierce’s eyes and mouth. She reported redness, burning, and temporary blindness.

Later police discovered the substance was a mixture of eggnog, hot sauce and WD-40.

Gatewood-Brown is charged with assault causing serious injury and is being held in the Polk County Jail.
