Governor Branstad says he’s still behind New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as the head of the Republican Governors Association.

Christie’s faced questions the past few weeks after emails showed his top staffers intentionally shut down part of a busy bridge last year.

The messages showed the shutdown was to punish a democratic mayor who refused to endorse Christie’s re-election campaign.

Branstad says Christie should remain the chairman of the RGA

“I think he’s done an excellent job. He was just-reelected by an outstanding margin. I guess I believe in our American system that people are innocent until proven guilty. In this case, he was unaware of what some staff people had done,” Branstad said.

Branstad served as the organization’s head about 25 years ago.
