Bacon enthusiasts will be converging on the state fairgrounds Saturday for the 7th annual Bacon Fest. Before then a lot of work is going in to making sure the event will be a success.

Before the "Viva Las Bacon" themed party begins, a lot of preparations happen first.

“We have 15 more cases that we`re still cooking and we`re doing this in two different locations,” says Helen Little with Campbell’s Concessions.

Little is one of 16 official bacon cookers, preparing strips and strips of the delicious staple for the event.

“It`s an explosion of all  kinds of different pork products that have bacon in them, on them, through them, around them,” says Little.

And their going to need a lot of it.

Around 14,000 bacon lovers will sample 200,000 strips of bacon in 22 different varieties.  That's equals 10,000 pounds of bacon! On top of that 35 vendors will whip up 72 different bacon infused delicacies to enjoy.

“We`ve seen sponsors embrace the event and try to go over and above and beyond what they`ve done in years past, so it`s going to be pretty unique to experience,” says Bacon Fest Event Manager Mindy Toyne.

Toyne says on top of delicious food and drinks there will also be plenty of entertainment.

“We are recreating a Vegas style disco called, ‘Club Sizzle’ it will have the capacity of 2,000 and will be unlike Des Moines has ever seen,” says Toyne.

Bacon enthusiasts will also enjoy a bacon eating contest, an Elvis only bar, bootleggers lounge, two bacon themed weddings, and can attend educational series on the pork product.

And if you weren't lucky to snag one of the tickets for this year, there's always 2015.

“It will always be a lot of bacon, it will always be central to the theme but it`s never going to be the same party twice,” says Toyne.

If you have a ticket, doors open at the state fairgrounds Saturday morning at 10 a.m. the event runs until 5:00 p.m.
