When the former Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Matt Strawn announced incorrectly that Mitt Romney won the 2012 caucuses, it took away Rick Santorum's attention he should have received for winning at the time.

Former Republican nominee for Iowa governor and party activist Doug Gross said if things hadn't gone so badly for Strawn during the caucuses, he could have been the likely candidate for the open U.S. Senate seat in the upcoming election.

Democrat and former Attorney General Bonnie Campbell said the caucuses were looked at harshly from outside of Iowa, particularly after the mishap over its winner.  Campbell said that this time the caucuses will need to run perfectly or Iowa could risk losing first-in-the-nation status.
