One person is dead after an accident on a slippery road in Des Moines Tuesday morning.

Des Moines police say it happened on the Highway 5 by-pass around 7:50 a.m. A truck traveling westbound lost control and skidded across the median and into incoming traffic. The truck hit a Chevy Cavalier.

The driver of the Cavalier, 45-year-old Sean Hammer of Norwalk, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck, 40-year-old Khamlei Somsavath of Des Moines, was not injured in the crash.

Officials say it appears poor road conditions played a role in the accident.

Whether charges will be filed in the crash will be determined after the completion of the investigation.

People, please, please, please remember, it is not how fast you can GO on snow and ice, but, how fast you can STOP. Even four wheel drives slide.
