Across the globe, the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia has people hooked.  And here in Iowa, the Olympic effort the athletes are putting in is inspiring some people to try a new winter sport.

Rick Flatt owns Sleepy Hollow sports park. He says everyone gets excited over the Olympics.

“You know kids see that there’s the potential for that in their future. So I think they like to live up to their idols and right now we’ve got some great ones in our Olympic team,” Flatt said.

But this year Flatt said he’s seen an impressive increase in women playing winter sports.

Girls like Avery McGaffin are skiing for the first time. And while it’s not always pretty, it's usually pretty fun.

But once skiers like Avery master a new skill, it can feel as good as getting a gold medal.
