Synthetic marijuana is being partially blamed for some recent deaths in Iowa.

The Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy says three people in their late teens to early 20’s had traces of the drug commonly known as K2, or Spice, in their systems when they died.

Officials won’t say if the drug was the sole cause of death.

A few years ago the Iowa legislature outlawed some of the chemicals used to make synthetic marijuana, but manufacturers keep changing the chemical make-up of the drugs making it hard for lawmakers to keep up.
