A judge sentenced a Des Moines teen in a brutal beating case from last summer.

Kent Tyler III was given a 50-year prison sentence.  Tyler will have to serve 70 percent of the 50-year sentence before he is eligible for parole.

Prosecutors said the 18-year-old threw the first punch in the attack that killed Richard Daughenbaugh in August of last year.  A jury found Tyler guilty of second-degree murder although he was originally charged with first-degree murder.

Daughenbaugh died near the Center Street Bridge in August.

Three others are also charged in relation to Daughenbaugh’s murder.  Their trials are scheduled to start in May.
