When the next round of winter weather hits this weekend, Iowans will be able to track what the roads are like from a new perspective.

The Iowa Department of Transportation is now putting images from its plow cameras online.

This winter the DOT has been testing the plow cams in about 100 maintenance vehicles across central Iowa.

The cameras snap pictures from the dashboard to show the conditions drivers will find on the roads.

DOT supervisors used the images to evaluate road conditions, without driving every route themselves. That will help save time and resources, and kept DOT workers safe during dangerous conditions.

Plow cams are now available to the public. The photos on the map disappear after 30 minutes to make sure drivers are getting the most current images available.
