Cold temperatures and heavy snow have made it difficult to keep Brenton Skating Plaza open this season, but Sunday, it was the heat keeping people off parts of the ice.

On the last day of the season, warm temperatures created soupy skating conditions.

That forced staff to block off portions of the rink, but officials were happy to be able to open at all.

This season, the rink closed a record twenty eight times due to winter weather.

“That’s eating into a third or fourth of our season. There’s not much we can do about it. We do what we can with what the weather gives us,” said Jessica Barlow with the Downtown Community Alliance.

While the rink is closing for skating, it will open again in June for special events.

A canopy will be installed over the space to host weddings, concerts, and festivals.
