A Des Moines police officer used a taser on a suspect who allegedly threatened the officer while advancing toward him.

Police say it happened just after 6:00 Monday night in the 5000 block of Southwest 9th Street. Witnesses say a man was walking around armed with a knife.

Officers found 57-year-old Thomas Hoye in an apartment, with the knife still in hand. Police say Hoye dropped the weapon when asked, but later threatened to kill one of the officers and advanced toward him.

That’s when Officer Collin Quinn fired a taser at the suspect’s chest and he fell to the ground.

Hoye was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, harassment and interference with official acts.
