Broadlawns Hospital is launching a new fundraising and education initiative to cut down on the wait time for those in need of mental health care in Iowa.

On average, Iowans in need of care must wait 120 days to get mental health services.
Broadlawns wants to cut down on that time and they’re getting some celebrity help to do so.

On Wednesday, the hospital announced Academy Award nominee Glenn Close will deliver the keynote speech at a daylong event on May 15th.

Close is a national spokesperson for mental health issues.

Local mental health advocates hope Close can give a voice a problem that is bigger than you may know.

“One in four adults suffer from mental health illnesses. It’s more common than heart disease, arthritis and diabetes,” Mike Richards says.

Iowa also ranks 48th in the nation in the number of in-patient beds available for mental health patients.
