The old Younkers building in downtown Des Moines was under construction and believed to be empty, but a crowd soon formed outside to watch the historic building burn early Saturday morning.

The fire was first reported about 12:50 a.m. and people who had been out downtown in the Court Avenue district gathered to watch the flames.

Witnesses recount seeing parts of the building collapse and fall off.
