A man accused of stabbing and killing a friend on the Meskwaki Settlement in Tama is now facing federal charges.

Twenty-year-old Jonathan Youngbear made an appearance in federal court Wednesday. He’s being held without bond.

Police arrested Youngbear in February after officers found 17-year-old Severn Jefferson unresponsive in a home on the settlement. Jefferson had been stabbed in the chest.

Police say Younbear was high on drugs and alcohol when he stabbed Jefferson.

It`s unclear what degree of federal charges the U.S. Attorney’s Office is seeking. If convicted, Youngbear could face life in prison.
