Every year landowners in Iowa can apply for a permit to harvest hay from highway roadsides.  The Iowa Department of Transportation released this week that permits are now available in Iowa to mow or harvest starting July 15th.

Mowing before then is against Iowa Code, because of bird habitats during the nesting season. Only one cutting is allowed per year.

The permits are required so the Iowa DOT can go over safety hazards and how to handle them.
