The name of a man shot and killed by law enforcement officers following an incident in Iowa Falls Thursday has been released.

Iowa Falls police were called to 413 College Avenue around 1:20 Thursday after receiving a call about an armed suicidal man at the home.

Officials say 25-year-old Leighton Fitz came out to the front porch of the home wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying several weapons. He allegedly ignored commands from officers on scene and after he reached for a weapon, officers opened fire.

Fitz died from his injuries at the scene.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation discovered several loaded weapons in Fitz’s home along with a gas mask. Threats against officers were also found on Fitz’s Facebook page.

Two Iowa Falls police officers and three Department of Public Safety officers were involved in the shooting. All five are on administrative leave while an investigation into the shooting is conducted.

An autopsy is being conducted on Fitz by the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny.
