NEW PROJECT: Ankeny Pavilion Groundbreaking
Ankeny celebrates a big groundbreaking Saturday.
Crews will be turning dirt for the new Ankeny Market and Pavilion at Southwest Third and Maple streets. It’s located at the trail head for the High Trestle Trail and two other trails.
The new project will feature two large, open-air shelters. One will host the Ankeny Uptown Farmer’s Market.
The project will cost $2 million, with more than $1 million of it already raised.
The city, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and Uptown Ankeny are all working on the project.
Parks and Recreation director Nick Lenox says the project will bring people together, “As Ankeny continues to grow, it really connects the community from neighborhood to neighborhood and you can access almost the entire community now by hopping on a community or regional trail.”
With the groundbreaking, crews will be able to do some grading or infrastructure work. A trail will be installed next spring. The pavilions will go in as fundraising continues and should be up by 2015.
It’s going to be a busy Saturday in Ankeny. The farmers market starts at 8:00 a.m., the groundbreaking takes place at 8:30 a.m., and the Mayor’s Bike Ride pushes off at 9:00 a.m. There is a 15 mile route, and a family-friendly three mile route.
