A known gang member is in the Polk County Jail accused of selling guns stolen from a local dealer.

Taylor Cook was arrested Monday night and charged with trafficking stolen weapons and possession of weapons as a felon.

When officers arrested the 25-year-old, they found a gun tucked into the waist of his pants. They say that gun was reported stolen from Jack Smith Gun Sales on the east side of Des Moines.

Seventeen guns were stolen from the shop in March, 2012.

Though Cook was carrying the gun, police say he may not be the one who stole it.

“Typically speaking what we’ve found is that once guns are stolen regardless of where they’re stolen from, houses, businesses, they get handed around a lot. Traded for different items, cash, drugs, other guns, depended on what’s needed on the street at the time,” Sgt. Jason Halifax of the Des Moines Police Department explained.

Police say so far, three of the stolen guns have been recovered, which means 14 are still on the streets.

Maybe, or maybe the thief just brought a big bag and took a lot of weapons. Thank you DSM cops for cleaning up the street and good luck with the rest.
