Rescue crews from the Des Moines Fire Department were called to Water Works Park around 1:00 p.m. Thursday after a minivan drove into a pond.
Officials say the accident happened when a husband was trying to teach his wife to drive and she confused the brake and the accelerator. Instead of braking she accelerated forward.
The husband grabbed the wheel to steer and overcorrected. The minivan ended up in the lake about 15 feet from shore. The man and woman stood on the windshield of the vehicle once it stopped sinking and then made their way to shore. They were not injured.
The pond is part of the water supply’s leaching system so officials were initially concerned about chemicals from the vehicle getting into the water but that doesn’t appear to have happened.

Actually reading the story it appears the husband cause the plunge by grabbing the wheel.
