AMES, Iowa – An Ames bus driver is being honored as the best in the nation after a weekend competition in Minnesota.

Nathan Shimanek has been driving CyRide buses for the last 15 years.

Last weekend he entered into the National Bus Rodeo for the first time and claimed Rookie of the Year and Driver of the Year awards beating 68 other drivers.

“We are very proud of Nathan and recognize the great job that he does in safely providing service to Ames residents and Iowa State University students each and every day.  He is an outstanding role model for his peers at CyRide, as well as around the state and highlights the great job drivers, dispatchers, and trainers do in delivering quality service to our customers,” CyRide Transit Director Sheri Kyras said in a statement.

In the competition drivers must navigate a bus through an obstacle course. Shimanek scored 881 points out of a possible 1,000.
