Newton Prison Damaged in Storm

NEWTON, Iowa – A midday storm damaged a prison unit Thursday.

Officials say a dorm in a release center at Newton Correctional Facility experienced significant water damage during a thunderstorm at about 12:30 p.m.

Inmates have been relocated to other rooms while staff make the area safe.

No one was injured. Visits and volunteers activities have been suspended at the minimum security facility that house 54 offenders.
