Children Spotted Falling in River Found Safe

FORT DODGE, Iowa - Two children who reportedly disappeared into the Des Moines River in Fort Dodge were found safe Friday night.

According to police, officers spotted a juvenile that matched the description of one of the juveniles officials had been searching for. Police were able to confirm that the juvenile and his sibling were spotted fishing in the Des Moines river on Thursday evening.

"We are extremely thankful that the two youth have been found, safe and sound," police said late Friday night.

A witness reported seeing two boys fall into the river at about 7 p.m. Thursday. A rescue operation was started that involved boats, aircraft and foot patrols along the river. The search resumed Friday at 8 a.m. before being suspended at 11 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service, as of Saturday morning the river as at 13.3', three feet above flood stage.
