BOONE, Iowa-- A Boone couple said their “I do’s” 70 years ago Wednesday. It just so happens that 70 is the magic number for their family.
LaVerne and Chloe Leininger have five children, 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. With spouses..
“That adds up to 70 people,” says the 88-year-old bride.
When she met her groom, it wasn`t exactly love at first sight.
“She was very bashful,” says 92-year-old LaVerne.
Their love story begins like a lot of Iowans. They met on a farm. Chloe lived in Cleveland, OH and would visit her family’s farm in Boone County during the summer. After a courtship that included letter writing and hay rides, the two walked down the aisle on August 20, 1944.
The couple credits their lasting love to a strong faith. They go to church on Sundays and “thank the Lord” every morning. The Leiningers have some advice for newlyweds.
“You gotta figure your wife as your best friend,” advises LaVerne.
“And never go to bed angry,” adds Chloe.
The two are celebrating their platinum wedding anniversary with a traditional date night of dinner and a movie.
