Jason-ManusOELWEIN, Iowa – The mayor of a northeast Iowa community, accused of sexually abusing two girls in 2010, has resigned.

Oelwein city officials confirmed Monday morning that they had received a letter of resignation from Mayor Jason Manus.

Manus, 36, was arrested earlier this month following an investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Department of Human Services. Investigators said that Manus sexually abused a 14-year-old girl four times and 9-year-old girl once during the summer of 2010.

Manus has been charged with five counts of second degree sexual abuse. His bond has been set at $125,000. If convicted, he faces up to 125 years in prison.

Manus was elected mayor of Oelwein in 2013.
