DES MOINES, Iowa -- According to AAA nearly 35 million Americans took to the roads Labor Day weekend. That’s up from the year before.

But even with the increase, the number of Iowa road fatalities is actually down from last year. Last year four people died on Iowa roads Labor Day weekend. This year just two people died.

While Labor Day fatalities are down, the Iowa State Patrol says the number of fatalities is still high.

"This time last year we currently had 193 and we're a little bit above that now. We're a little bit ahead of where we were last year. We'd like to see that go down,” said Sergeant Scott Bright.
