WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — A big project gets underway Friday night that’ll impact traffic near the west mixmaster.

At 8:00 p.m.,  I-235 will be reduced to one lane in both directions at the west mixmaster. Both on-ramps from I-35 to I-235 will also be closed.

Detours will be clearly marked and the road will re-open Monday morning at 6:00 a.m. but then resume each weekend for the next month.

All of this is necessary to repair the bridge over I-35.

“We have to remove some of the pavement to  get to bridge abutments and beams and doing relatively minor repairs work but it does require us to remove some pavement and obviously close some lanes…to do that,” says Jesse Tibodeau with the Iowa DOT.

The speed limit on I-235 will drop to 55 mph during construction. There will also be extra police officers in the area to help with traffic.
