DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines’ Plan and Zoning Commission has moved the wrecking ball a step closer to the downtown YMCA building.

Despite plenty of opposition, Thursday night the commission voted against designating the YMCA building as a Des Moines landmark. The designation would make it more difficult for a developer to tear down the building.

“That is an extremely important building. It is next door to the World Food Prize one of our greatest restoration works in this city. We get people all over the world coming to that building, do we really want to tell them we tore down an historic building to put up a glitzy highrise,” questioned Des Moines resident Pat Meiners.

The commission’s recommendation will now go to the city council for a final vote.
