DES MOINES, Iowa -- Wednesday is "International Walk to School Day”. More than 4,000 school around the world participate every year. Partnership for a Walkable America started Walk to School Day in 1997 to build awareness for the need for walkable communities.

A few elementary schools are participating walking students to school in a large group, but Goodrell is one of the few middle schools participating in central Iowa. Goodrell held its first walk 12 years ago with 25 people, but this year they hope to have 300.

Organizers say this event is so popular, Goodrell holds a second Walk to School Day in the spring.

The group walked from Grandview Park to the middle school shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday.
