This Is Why One Candidate Was Missing on Channel 13

DES MOINES, Iowa–No matter which candidate wins on election night, the winner will be a rookie in Iowa’s Third Congressional District. Republican Congressman Tom Latham announced he was retiring last year. Democrat Staci Appel, a former state senator from Ackworth, and Republican David Young, a former chief of staff to Senator Chuck Grassley are their parties’ nominees to replace Latham next year.

Channel 13 wanted to give viewers in the district a chance to see both candidates side by side, so they could compare their stances on the issues that matter. We would show an issue per day starting on Monday on the Channel 13 News at Four, as well as show answers from the candidates on other news broadcasts, the station’s website and digital platforms.

Both campaigns initially agreed to an interview. Channel 13 interviewed Young at a farm in Van Meter last Wednesday. Appel’s campaign agreed to allow us to do an interview with her last Thursday night in Urbandale.

Two hours before the interview, the campaign canceled because a spokesman said Appel was running too far behind from previous events. He said he would call to reschedule on Friday. That spokesman never called. Channel 13 reached out on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Late Monday morning, the spokesman responded for the first time since Thursday and said Appel would be available Tuesday night. That meant Appel would not be responding in time for the stories that aired Monday and Tuesday during the Channel 13 News at Four.

Since the deadlines were relayed to the campaigns to give adequate time for responses, we aired Young’s response Monday as originally planned and will also show you his answer to the second question Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

Issue number 1: What would the candidates do better guarantee Social Security benefits would be available for those who need them in the future?

Here is what Young said he would do to.

  • Fiddlesticks

Appel was just too busy …. Too busy dunking her head in the toilet and then flushing to get the swirly-doo that she seems to like so much. This would also explain that bright yellow glow her hair gives off.

  • Brutally Honest

If she is too busy for this what do you think will happen if (lets hope she doesnt) she gets voted in? She will be too busy to report for work and too busy to vote on the issues and will not represent iowa.

I see this article a little different than those who have already put a comment up. You want me to believe you just had to run the story without her side? At any other time do you run stories with only half the story? Maybe. But what I see coming from this news channel is more spin. Maybe it is your producer’s who are not flexible? Sort of like Brooke telling us five days in a row now how Michelle Obama mispronounced Bruce Braley’s name. So she made a mistake, it’s not like it was a mistake like drunk driving or anything like that. Oh… wait…. Your viewers are not as dumb as the Republicans would like the voters to be.

You may have made the first post ever saying the news media has a Republican bias…..

I personally look at it this way. THe dates were given to the campaigns. They BOTH knew when the story would air, one group dropped the ball and lost their opportunity at equal time on the issue (thier fault, they were contacted repeatedly AFTER the intial deadline passed). So glad these candiates aren’t representing my district.

I hope she does not win as she will be another follower of the DNCwith no mindset as to the needs of those back in Iowa. She is a empty shell.

David Young thinks farmers making $150,000 a year should be able to steal an additional $200,000 in cash welfare from the tax payers while making it harder for the average citizen to even get food stamps.

    • do ur job

First the end of social security, now tax breaks for the wealthy farmer (is that amount before or after operating expenses?) Golly gee, Henny Penny, the next thing you know, there will be a war on women. Exactly what orifice is Joe digging in?
