ANKENY, Iowa -- Controlling cancer in Iowa is the goal of a group that's gathered in Ankeny this week.

The Iowa Cancer Summit brought hundreds of people together the past two days. The event is the only state-wide comprehensive cancer control conference.

It's designed to connect health care educators, professionals, and researchers so they can exchange best practices. They also talked about carcinogens that they feel need more attention, like smokeless tobacco and indoor tanning

“We know up to half of all cancers are related to lifestyle decision. So one thing that everyone in Iowa can do is listen to your doctor, practice healthy choice, do the right thing and reduce your risk of getting cancer,” says Dr. George Weiner of the University of Iowa.

Officials say screenings are reducing cancer deaths, especially from cervical and colorectal cancer.
