DES MOINES, Iowa -- Des Moines Performing Arts hopes to complete its $12 million renovation of Cowles Commons (formerly known as Nollen Plaza) by May 2015.

It has been decades since the public square underwent a major renovation. Crews have filled in the old amphitheater and are getting ready to pour concrete.

Cowles Commons will feature a “red carpet”, new sculpture, and zero depth water fountain. Most of the noticeable changes will be done before the end of 2014.

Officials hope this renovation will provide a more welcoming atmosphere. Des Moines Performing Arts plans on putting on performances at Cowles Commons before and after performances at the Civic Center.

Des Moines Performing Arts has already started putting together a timeline for its newest project, renovating the exterior of the Civic Center. The renovations will match its neighbor Cowles Commons. Officials say construction on that project could start as early as next year.
