DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police say two men have been charged in connection with the death of an infant who died after he was run over by an SUV back in August.
Police say four-month-old Breland Garrett was in a child car seat in the driveway at 2523 E. Walnut on August 30 when an SUV rolled over him. Adults had been loading several children into the vehicle at the time of the accident. The child was transported to the hospital but died from his injuries.
The baby’s father, 26-year-old Brian Garrett, has been charged with child endangerment resulting in death. He’s being held on a $100,000 bond in the Polk County Jail.
The driver of the SUV, 33-year-old Deanthony Clark is facing charges of driving while barred and felony OWI. He’s also charged with five counts of neglect of a dependent. He’s being held in the Polk County Jail on a $57,000 bond.
A police report from the incident shows the driveway was littered with beer cans. It also stated the driver and another man had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and smelled strongly of alcohol.
At the time of the accident Sgt. Jason Halifax with Des Moines police said, “We don’t feel it was an intentional act on anyone’s party to strike the child or cause injuries or deaths.”
