STORY CITY, Iowa-The date was August 3 of 1973. That was the year Story City’s new pool opened. As you might expect the outdoor pool has seen some wear and tear over the years. That’s why Story City leaders are asking residents to vote on building a new pool November 4.

“Damage from chemicals added to the water have taken their toll and the edges of the deck are crumbling,” according to a City news release.   “Every year more and more leaks need to be repaired.”

“We’ve had to encounter many leaks and things where we have to dig up the bottom of the pool,” said Jenny Nelson who is the Recreation and Aquatics Supervisor for the City of Story City. “Those costs are starting to get to the point where we may have to close the pool completely,”

Voters on November 4 will be asked to approve a $2.65 million bond issue. For the owner of a $150,000 home that would increase taxes around $98.

The pool would feature zero depth entry, spray zones, two water slides, and lap swimming.  There would also be lounge areas, and a new bathhouse and concession building. The new pool would be built on the site of the current pool near the Story City Carousel.

The old pool has been losing around $65,000 annually. The new pool would be projected to operate at a loss of around half the current loss.

“This was put on the forefront by our Council to be one of the priorities in our 5 year plan,” said Nelson.  The pool is important for teaching young swimmers in the town.”It’s definitely kind of a hot spot, for your first and second graders when they’re kind of starting to do things on their own,” said Nelson.

The City proposed a larger swimming complex on another site 5 years ago, that plan was defeated.
