DUNLAP, Iowa — An Iowan who was seriously injured while hunting coyote is expected to survive.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Clark Melby, 88, was getting out of his vehicle in a harvested corn field west of Dunlap Wednesday at about 5 p.m. when he fell, and the high-powered rifle he was carrying fired and hit him in the chest.
The bullet passed through him and did not hit any vital organs.
Melby was alone at the time of the accident, but he called a neighbor who contacted emergency crews.
Melby was taken by air ambulance to a Nebraska hospital where he underwent surgery.
The DNR is investigating the incident.
