DES MOINES, Iowa — More than 33,000 Des Moines Water Works customers will be getting a small refund on their next bill.

The Des Moines Register reports Water Works was collecting tax on a voluntary $3.99 monthly fee for the waterline service maintenance program called HomeServe.

The tax first showed up in spring 2013.

The state received $105,675 of unlawful taxes paid by 33,338 people.

A complaint from a customer prompted an inquiry.

Water Works stopped collecting the sales tax in October.

Customers don’t have to do anything. They’ll receive a credit of between 24 cents to roughly $4.50 on their next bill.

Yeah but they are only giving a refund of .24 to 4.50. They still ripping people off. With that illegal tax charge we was charged 38.00 a year. So they still getting over on people. I remember the visit I made to their office in 2012 when I told them they was ripping people off. Because I had 8 people in my house averaged 150 water bill then everyone moved out and it as me and the girls and they was still trying to charge me 150 they will get over on you keep an eye on your bill.
