DES MOINES, Iowa — Plans for the Wilkins Building project, which is the old Younkers building, had to be reconfigured after a fire destroyed most of the building in March.

Alexander Company now plans an $18 million project that will include 29-market rate apartments, 31 affordable units, and retail space. It also includes a renovation to the Younkers Tea Room, with a 10,000 square foot event space.

The original, $37 million project, would have included 120 apartments with retail and commercial space.

Developers are asking for $1.5 million in assistance from the city. The original project had $2.3 million coming from tax increment financing.
