Five Iowans Dead After Head-On Crash

SLOAN, Iowa — Investigators are trying to figure out why the driver of an SUV lost control and smashed head-on into a pickup truck Saturday afternoon, killing five people and injuring three near Sloan in northwest Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol report said the crash happened on Highway 141 around 3:30 Saturday afternoon. It said Shishay Gidey, 53, of Sioux City, was driving west on Highway 141 near mile marker 3, went onto the shoulder, overcorrected and ended up in the eastbound lane in the path of the truck driven by Larry Malone, 70, of Des Moines.

Both drivers and another passenger survived the crash. But the patrol identified five other passengers who died:

Kibrom Gebremicael, 46, of Sioux City

Yohanes Tesfamariam, 34, of Sioux City

BahtaGebremedhen, 60, of Sioux City

Donna Timm, 80, of Ute

Myrna Malone, 70, of Des Moines
