HULL, Iowa — A long-time Iowa lawmaker passed away over the weekend.

State Representative Dwayne Alons of Hull died late Saturday night.

In October, Alons announced he was battling renal cancer.

He was first elected to the Iowa House in 1998 and served on the Veterans Affairs Committee. Before that he was a farmer and a retired Iowa Air National Guard Brigadier General.

Governor Branstad described Alons as “a true statesman.” He will set a date for a special election for House District 4 at a later date.
