Des Moines police say you should using mail tracking services to know exactly when you package will arrive. That way you can quickly move it from your door step to a secure location.

Once inside police say all gifts should be kept in an area that is not visible from a window or door.

If you’re at the mall make sure gifts are also out of view and stored in the trunk.

Des Moines police say you should also keep an inventory sheet of your property. On it you should write down the make and model of the item, a serial number, and a brief description.

In case any items are stolen, police will use the sheet to return any property that is recovered.
