DES MOINES, Iowa — An Altoona mother accused of child abuse will be arraigned on February 9th.

Jennifer Mills made a preliminary court appearance Friday morning.

She and her fiancé, Christopher Whitfield, are charged with child endangerment and possession of a controlled substance.

Police went to the couple’s home last week after Southeast Polk school officials alerted them to possible child abuse. When they arrived, they say they found Mills’ three-year-old dangerously close to an open oven that was being used to heat the home.

A four-month-old was also unattended.

Police say they found Whitfield passed out in another room.

Whitfield waived his preliminary court appearance and is also scheduled for arraignment February 9th.
